2010 World Expo

World Expositions are galleries of human inspirations and thoughts. Since 1851 when the Great Exhibition of Industries of All Nations was held in London, the World Expo have attained increasing prominence as grand events for economic, scientific, technological and cultural exchanges. At the same time, this event is a great opportunity for different countries to increase their world reputation and image. Thus many countries tried their best to bid for the right of holding this world event.

Shanghai handed in the application for holding 2010 World Expo on May 2nd,2001. Since then,China had undergone a lot of harsh inspections. Finally, Dec.3rd 2002became the unforgettable day for Shanghai because it was on that day that Shanghai won World Expo 2010 Bid at the 132nd general assembly of the Burea  of International Expo.(BIE) in Monte Carlo.

Expo 2010 Shanghai China will be a  grand international gathering. This exposition, from May 1, 2010 to October 31, 2010, will last for 184 days. During these days, we shall endeavor to attract about 200 nations and international organizations to take part in the exhibition as well as 70 million visitors from home and abroad, an average of 400,000 a day, ensuring the widest possible participation in the history of the World Expo. By the end of 2007, 167 countries and 27 international organizations had confirmed their participation in the 2010 World Expo.

The theme of the 2010 World Expo is "Better City, Better Life." The mascot of Shanghai World Expo is a lovely design and  a perfect match for the emble, helps to deepen the theme.The mascotHaibao, literally meaning sea treasure, was an imaginary object created from the Chinese character"人" meaning people. The site of Expo 2010 Shanghai, an area of 5.28 square kilometers, is in the waterfront area on both sides of the Huangpu River, mostly between Nanpu Bridge and Lupu Bridge. The eastern part of the site covers 3.93 square kilometers and the western part of 1.35 Kilometers. The core area (into which an admission ticket will be required) is 3.22 square kilometers. Inside the expo site, there are spaces foe exhibition, for performance, for discussion and for service.

After the construction, tourists will see many symbolic building and get to know more about city and city life. In Pudong area, there are Expo Axis, Expo Center, Art Performing Center, Chinese Pavilion, Theme Pavilion, Pavilions for foreign countries, and a large ecological park named Pudong Riverside Oasis.The pavilion worth appreciating is the theme pavilion which consists of five pavilions built around the theme. These five pavilion are Urbanian, City Being, City Planet, City Civilization and Dream Pavilion. They illustrate the expo theme from different aspects. In Puxi area, tourists will enjoy themselves in Urban Best Practices Area (UBPA) and enterprise pavilions. Some of these constructions will be kept forever and will become symbolic attractions of Shanghai.
