Duolun Road

Duolun Road in Shanghai was originally called Doule’an Road. It is situated in Hongkou District, with one end near Lu Xun Park and Hongkou Football Ground, and the other connecting with Sichuan Road (N). Before 1949, this was the Japanese Concession. Compared with its busier surroundings, the road is not conspicuous. However, in the 1930s, the cultural atmosphere of this 550 –meter-long road became saturated with significant and advanced ideas. It can be said unequivocally that the road holds an important position in the contemporary history of China. Therefore in 1998 the people’s Government of Hongkou District decided to renovate the Duolun Road so as to restore its original features of the 1930s. A walk in the street will bring you back to Shanghai of the years in the 1920s and 1930s.

On Duolun Road, a location filled with literary lore, visitors can see scenes from 60 years ago through realistic statues of exquisite craftsmanship. People can find Lu Xun in his prime, talking with a Left-Wing writer in the Café. Holding lit cigarettes, with hot tea on the table, they seem to be drafting the principles for the Left-Wing writer’s work. In another section of the road, visitors can see the young Ding Ling sitting in a long armchair on a street corner. For a while, she looks thoughtfully at a book, and then, for a time, she appears to be writing down ideas, Outside Hongwen Bookstore Mr. Uchiyama Kanzou, a long-time friend of Lu Xun, s drinking jasmine tea alone to dispel his boredom and gloom….
