Lu Xun’s Former Residence, Memorial Hall and Mausoleum

LuXun , originally named Zhou Shuren, was a great man of letters, thinker and revolutionist in China. He was the founder of the new cultural movement and pioneered the May 4th Movement, a cultural enlightenment in 1919.
The former residence of Lu Xun, a three-storied building with red bricks and tiles, is located at No.9, Lane 132 of Sanying Road near Hongkou Park in Shanghai. It was outside the former foreign concession, but in one of the so—called “areas with roads which extend beyond the foreign concession.” Hence, Lu Xun named his residence “Qie Jie Ting” by taking half each character of “Zu Jie”, the Chinese term for foreign concession and named his new collections after that Mr. Lu Xun worked indefatigably on the revolutionary literary front despite his failing health and lived there until his death in October 19, 1936.
This residence has been well preserved and restored to its original layout with his furniture and articles of his daily life arranged as they were in his lifetime. Lu Xun made good on his pledge to devote his life to the service of his motherland.
Lu Xun’s Memorial Hall, first established in Hongkou Park(now named after Lu Xun) in 1956, is a two –storied residential courtyard I the style of south of the Yangtze River. In 1999, Lu Xun’s Memorial Hall was rebuilt at the original site of the Lu Xun Park and still keeps the former style. It occupies an area of 4212 square meters with a total floor space of 4683 square meters. The building is simple and unsophisticated with a tablet inscribed as “Lu Xun’s Memorial Hall” by Zhou Enlai, the late premier of China.
200,000 relics, including valuable manuscripts, historical documents, photos and the things left behind by Lu Xun, on display in the hall highlight the social and cultural activities carried by him during his ten-year stay in Shanghai. Most of the furniture, articles and books supposedly arranged in the way they were during Lu Xun’s lifetime.
