Peace hotel (Cathay Hotel)

A renowned 5-star hotel on the beautiful Bund, the Peace Hotel is located right in the heart of commerce and finance of Shanghai, facing the booming Pudong New Area and Oriental Pearl TV Tower over the Huangpu River.

First opened to the public as Cathay Hotel on September, 1929, the building was invested by Victor Sassoon, a Jewish merchant. Built in the Gothic style of the Chicago school, the Cathay Hotel was an outstanding modern high-rise of steel frame structure in ten stories and partly in 13 stories in the middle. The outer walls of the different stories were built of granite, except the ninth and the top floors of the well-paved bricks. The vertical lines, waistlines and eaves are all carved. Part of the roof on the eastern side is in a cone shape and covered with copper. The impressive interior deco and suits on the top floors are indifferent style of India, Spain, France, England, Italy, etc. As is often the case with such old hotels, the lobby areas are absolutely beautiful with exquisite woodwork and elaborate decorations.

Entering the hotel through the revolving door, visitors might soon step on the yellow Italian marble-paved hall. And looking above, one can easily find a copper carved chandelier. The hotel was a symbol of the most luxurious society and gained the glory as the “Number One Mansion in the Far East.”
