Riverside Promenade

The Riverside Promenade is 2,500 meters long. It starts at Taitong Zhan Dock in the North, and ends up at Dongchang Road Dock in the south. Known as Shanghai’s East Bund in the 21^st century, the Riverside Promenade is a construction for flooring prevention, avenue, greenery, and sightseeing.

The 2.5-kilometer-long promenade consists of manicured lawns, flower beds, and s broad walkway dotted with kiosks. In the summer, you can “enjoy wading” in the Huangpu River from the wave platform, which is only one meter above the tides. Installed along the Riverside Promenade are two groups of spurting fountains, 21 on each side, symbolizing the 21^st century, and the tidal scene created by the spurted waters is symbolic of the surging tide of the economic reform. The petrel over the waves is a sign of prosperity. At the southern end of the Promenade stands a colossal iron anchor, a reminder of the former shipyard on this site. A large piece of granite is placed on a sculpture of ship. The rock is a ballast Chinese people used in their voyage to Hawaii in 19^th century. It was brought here by some American seamen who visited Shanghai in 1998. In the middle of the Promenade stands a white structure. It is the Oriental Pearl Wharf. Taking shape in 1998,the Oriental Pearl Wharf is designed for ferries and yachts. The white building is mainly a dining establishment for the guests and visitors. It has a floor space of 6,000 square meters, containing a waiting room, a VIP room, a restaurant and a bar.

In addition to its own attractions, the promenade offers a fine view of the Bund at a distance and marvelous views of Pudong’s skyscrapers. After dark, when the building on both banks of the river are lit up and beacon lights sweep the river lanes, the view is one of the best in Shanghai.
