The Bund closing beauty Huangpu Park (Public Garden)

At the foot of the Waibaidu Bridge lies another place not to be missed-the Huangpu Park (once called Public Garden). It is known as the earliest park open to the public in China.

It was not until 1928 that this Garden was opened to Chinese without any restrictions. After the liberation in 1949, Public Garden was renamed Huangpu Park and opened to everyone free of charge.

Now Huangpu Park has become a part of the embankment along the river. The memorial walls and the waterfalls on both sides of the wide steps designed to enrich the scene set off the main theme. At the base of the monument is a 120-meter-long granite relief work, depicting the people’s revolutionary struggles over a century in Shanghai since the Opium War.

The construction of the Monument included two major projects: the constructions of the flood prevention wall in Huangpu Park, and the constructions of the Monument. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on December 31, 1988 and the monument was completed on May 27,1994.
