The Huangpu River is the symbol of Shanghai, and its ever-flowing water tells the history of the revolutionary struggles for more than 100 years. The three 50-meter-tall granite pillars, standing n the center of the circular plaza, represent the three glories people’s heroes who laid down their lives in all revolutionary struggles in Shanghai during the great War of People’s Liberation from 1945 to 1949, since the May Fourth Movement in 1919, and since the Opium War in 1840.
The Huangpu River can also be called either the Chun Shen River or the Huangxiepu. As the stories goes, over 2000 years ago in the Warring States Period, present-day Shanghai area was a part of the fief of Huangxie. As the important river was silted up in its upper reaches,Huangxie employed thousands of laborers to dredge the channel and direct its course into the East China Sea.
The Huangpu River rises from Dianshan Lake in the west suburb of Shanghai and joins the Yangtze River at Wusong Mouth. The river, yellow in color and ice-free all the year round, totals 114 kilometers in length and averages 400 meters wide and 9meters deep. It passes the city and divides it into two parts. The west part is the Shanghai with a glorious past, While the Pudong New Area on the east shore is evidence of the financial power of the city.
Now the area along the Huangpu River is the most impressive district in Shanghai. Whether it is in the daytime or at night, the views along the river are equally beautiful. On one side the granite offices, banks, consulates, and hotels of Shanghai’s past form a stately panorama along the Bund, while on the Pudong side, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the Jin Mao Tower, the World Finance Center, and the new skyscrapers from the tallest and most expensive new building project in the world. These buildings are the best records of the development of the city while the Huangpu Liver, the birthplace of Shanghai, is the faithful eyewitness.
