The Site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China

At 76 Xingye Road, A small street near Fuxing Park, stands a beautifully restored gray brick house with a stone—framed gate and glittering copper hoops on the black—lacquered front door where, in July 1921, the Chinese Communist Party was born. The house, situated on what was formerly La Rue Wantz, in the old French Concession, was home to the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China. Gathering here under the cover name of the Peking University Summer Vacation Tourist Group” were 13 delegates, including Mao Zedong ,Dong Biwu, Deng Enming, Zhang Guotao, Chen Tanqiu, He Shuheng, Wang Jinmei, Bao Huiseng. Liu Renjing, chen Gongbo, Zhou Fuhai, Li Da and Li Hanjun. It was here, at the residence of Li Hanjun’s brother, that the delegates, representing 53 Party members across China, held bulk of their earliest meetings and discussions. Also present at the meeting were two representatives from the Communist International, a Dutch named Maring and a Russian named Nikorsky.

The house has been a museum since 1952, attracting millions of visitors. Relics from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are shown, alongside texts and TV documentaries that detail the kinds of oppressions that inspired the Communist movement in the first place, and making a clear approach to the obscure history of the Party’s rise to power.
