The Yuyuan Garden closing beauty Hall of Three Corn-ears

This is the Hall of Three Corn-ears (San Sui Tang), built in1760. It is a replacement of the original building constructed 400 years ago. When the garden was completed in 1587,standing on this site was Hall of Happiness and Longevity(Le shou Tang), a grand structure overlooking a scenic lake. It was the place for the owner to entertain his invited guests as well as his family. After the garden was bought out by merchants in mid-18th century, the businessmen in rich and bean trade managed to build their office building on the ruin of the pleasure ground and named the new building Hall of Three Corn-ears, representing their wish for a bumper harvest. As a guild building often shows, this Hall is lavishly decorated with trade-related furnishings like carvings of crops and fruits as well as auspicious designs of pines and cranes.

Hall of Three Corn-ears is the grandest in this garden, measuring nine meters high and with a five –bay width. For a while in the Qing Dynasty, this spacious hall had been the meeting place for gentries and officials to study imperial edicts.

Now the hall is furnished as a typical meeting room with a complete set of furniture. In the middle of the hall stands a screen which carries an essay on the birth of the garden by its founder, Pan Yunduan. Hung from the ceiling are three plaques. The plaque at the bottom carries the name of this hall. The middle one reads Ling Tai Jing Shi, which refers to the first legendary garden in China.
