Located in the north of Zhejiang Province ,Wuzhen town is embraced by the Beijing—hangzhou Grand Canal with rivers and canals crisscrossing the whole town. For hundreds of years, its residents have been building houses along the rivers and trading near the bridges. The ancient docks, waterside pavilions and corridors stretch out for miles and create romantic atmosphere that is typical of water town south of the Yangtze River----the perfect spot for a tranquil retreat. The small town, with its black tiled, tung oil—painted timber framework houses ,which contrast sharply with their white walls and gray fagging ,brings to mind a Chinese ink and wash painting. It had a prosperous past and simple lifestyle.Along the narrow slbstone-paved streets, visitors canfind an old Chinese drugstore,a pawn-shop,restaurants,a distillery and residential houses that wre all built more than 100 years ago.

In the town center is a small square with a high stage, which was built in 1749,a time when nearby peasants would row their boats to town and sit in them to wath the plays. The actors, most local people, perform Shaoxin,Peking and flower—drum operas. It is said that the performance were originally delicated to gods worshipped in the Xiuzhen Temple, opposite the stage. One of the stop three Taoist temples in South China, the Xiu Zhen Temple had been destroyed and rebuilt several times in its history ,and lost much of its former splendor in the process.A giant abacus ,,rather than a tablet ,hangs over it gate ,engraved on both sides with the couplet” Man proposes, but god disposes.”

Wuzhen dates bak 7,000 years ,to the dawn of Chines history and in more recent centuries has been a center of business due to its canals. The Beijing---Hangzhou Grand Canal and other small river wander through the town, with house on both banks
