Zhouzhuang,60 kilometers from Shangahi to the east and 38 kilometers from Suzhou to the west ,can be reached by land and waterway via Shanghai,Suzhou and Kunshan. It coers an area of 36 square kilometers and has a population of 23.000.

The town of Zhouzhuang was first built by King of the Wu in the Spring and Autumn period(770—476 B.C).In the Northern Song Dynasty(1086),the residence of ZhouDigong was made a temple, and later it was named ZhouZhuang. With a history of over 900 years ,Zhouzhuang is know as “ No.1 water town of China”.It is famous for its unique man-made sight, traditional architectural design, and folkways.

Here almost every piece of the ancient town is a work of art .The arched bridges, whose reflections in the water once created perfectly harmonious full moon shapes ,lead over the canals and into twisted lanes ,not much wider than a man’s outstretched arms.Wooden buildings that provide shade and liven the stony passageways house people whose bedrooms remain cool even in the hottest season, thanks to the mysterious structure of the old house.

Culinary repasts aside ,one of the most delightful attractions in the village is riding on onr of the gondola—style boats that ply the canals crisscrossing the village and linking it to the busy network of the lakes and rivers, the life blood of the region.Visitors can tour on the town by boat, serenaded by women gondoliers as they pole along with a single rear—mounted oar that works back and for the in a unique swaying motion.

The boat affords a great vantage point from which visitors can look into the rickety homes that hang over the waterways, with stone steps running into the cannals where young boys skim stones. But the entrepreneurial boat handlers will give you the opportunity to be taken along other ,narrower, more interesting canals that lead to the ourskirts of the town .A ticket can buy a ride out to the lakes where fishermen use trained birds ,rather than nets and rods ,to bring in the catch of the day.Relaxing on a boat through the town is an unforgettable experience.
