Special Report: Expo 2010 Shanghai China

BEIJING, May 7 -- A number of new products and technologies, displayed by China's "old bicycle brands" like Phoenix and Forever during the on-going 19th Shanghai International Bicycle Exhibition, are well received by the visitors.

Phoenix, founded in 1958, brought more than 40 types of bicycles to the exhibition, most of them are new products yet not on sale. Folding bikes are the highligts of Pheonix brand in this exhibition. Apart from varieties of bike-frame materials using aluminum alloy, magnesium alloy and stainless steel, the folded part of bicycles have also applied some easy-to-use technology, which originally used for military purposes. The staff displayed the whole process of folding a bike within 10 seconds on the spot.

　 Soundbite: Zhu Pengcheng, Deputy Director of Marketing, Shanghai Pheonix Bicycle Co,ltd, said, "This technology was co-developed by our company and other company. We have independent intellectual property rights and only Pheonix is using such technology at the present."

According to Zhu Pengcheng, the sales of folded bikes has covered 15 percent to 20 percent of Pheonix bikes total sales due to the constant technological innovation, and a continous growth has been showed.

Next to the Pheonix exhibit is China's oldest bicycle brand--Forever, which was founded in 1940. Forever has brought the advanced "rental system of public bicycles" to the exhibition, which allowing visitors to rent a bike by a deposit of 20 RMB (2.9 U.S. dollars) and shuttle in every exhibit hall. It is said that this rental system has currently been used in Zhangjiang subway station, Waigaoqiao bonded zone and Zhongshan Park in Shanghai,with more than 30 rental networks. In the next step, Forever company plans to update the system technologically, like installing coded lock to every bicycle.

Soundbite: Zheng Guo, Project Manager of Shanghai Forever Bicycle Co,ltd, said, "Our coded lock is mainly for some people who temporarily want to go to the department store or the bank. They could lock the bicycles by themselves in case of being stolen without our rental spot around the place."

The 19th Shanghai international bicycle exhibition is China's most influential and largest bicycle trade event and is being considered as "the wind vane for the future bicycle development." More than 1000 bicycle conmpanies from almost 90 countries and regions attended the exhibition.
