Sewage plant under way
Work has begun on the first sewage treatment plant in Lhasa, capital of the autonomous region, the municipal construction bureau said yesterday.
It is one of the city's major projects for 2006-10 and will
cost the central government 122 million yuan ($18 million).
The plant will initially be able to process 50,000 tons of sewage every day, with the capacity to be doubled later.
Domestic sewage is currently discharged directly into the Lhasa River, which threatens the environment, and has been a growing issue due to the city's expanding population and economic development.
